Training and coaching - SCRUM

We offer Training and Coaching for clients who can use our experience. Let us advise you in developent methods, architectural design or one of the special areas we train and coach in.

Our traning and coaching is particularly focused on the agile method SCRUM. Scrum is ideal for handling complex projects. It provides a framework for producing results while operating under changing requirements and with less than perfect technology and tools.

Scrum is based on

  • acknowledgement of the changing nature of requirements and technology
  • The need for empirical process control rather than defined process control
  • Self-organizing teams
  • Japanese style methods of constant improvement
  • The power of incremental delivery of functionality(sashimi)
  • Cross-functional teams producing complete product increments

The Game Plan

  • Produce a prioritized backlog of requirements
  • Split work into a series of Sprints with well defined goals
  • Produce a Sprint backlog of tasks
  • For every day in the Sprint:
    • Work on Sprint backlog tasks
    • Hold a daily Scrum meeting to synchronize
    • Re-estimate effort remaining to completes tasks
  • At the end of the Sprint the team presents finished functionality

The Results

  • Deadlines are kept
  • Higher quality of product
  • Much higher productivity
  • High visibility of the process and progress of a project
  • Quick adaptation to changing needs or circumstances. The opportunity to react in time
  • Obstacles made visible
  • Much higher motivation among team-members
  • The comfort of having made the best possible decisions en route

What is Scrum anyway?

  • Scrum is an empiric method for controlling complex projects, it builds on well-known and documented principles from non-IT industries
  • In IT projects with non-ideal or changing specifications and unknown or bug-ridden technology, Scrum gives a much higher success-rate than the traditional defined “Waterfall” method
  • The term Scrum is from Rugby, where a scrum is a method to get the ball back in action. The daily Scrum meeting has that function in a Scrum project, to keep the project moving, never stop and to get the opportunity to remove any thing blocking progress
  • Scrum is one of the agile methods that are rapidly gaining acceptance in the IT world. Together with its cousin – eXtreme Programming – it is changing how organizations wrestle results out of increasing chaos

The Agile Heart

  • We realize that our foundations for projects are constantly changing. We can no longer believe in producing a plan and executing accordingly. On day one of the project something has changed
  • The only known way to attack such complex problems are by adopting empirical process control. We inspect and adapt, inspect and adapt and so on until we are within our success criteria
  • Scrum splits a project up in a number of Sprints. Each Sprint is short enough to give an almost stable and predictable environment and long enough to actually get something done
  • In the Sprint we synchronize the team, make sure we are on the right track, remove obstacles for progress and generally optimize team performance
  • Between Sprints we present the results we have accomplished and prioritize the things we want to achieve during the next Sprint. If something has changed we take it into account here
  • We inspect by constantly re-estimating how much effort is left

The Scrum Master

  • The Scrum Master is the guardian of the Scrum process and the coach of the team and the other stakeholders
  • The Scrum Master is a facilitator who helps the team find its own best solutions to problems
  • The Scrum Master works with the rest of the organization to remove any obstacles or impediments threatening the team's performance
  • The Scrum Master conducts the meetings, ensures that feedback is obtained, reporting is done and visibility is introduced into the process
  • The Scrum Master helps the team become increasingly self-propelling and hence less dependent on the Scrum Master
  • The Scrum Master is an agent of change in the organization
